BABY'S LINENS

Whatever colors and patterns you choose, when it comes to linens, size matters. Sheets and mattress pads must fit the mattresses you'll be using tightly. That way they won't come loose and pose a safety risk. You will be requiring the following -

  • Three to four fitted sheets each, for cot, carry cot and/or pram. All sheets should fit very snugly, so they can't be pulled out. You might also consider half-sheet that tie or snap onto the cot bars and go on top of the fitted baby bed sheet. If your baby spits up a lot, it'll be easier to change just half-sheet instead of removing the hard-to-remove fitted sheets. Be sure the half-sheets are securely attached.

    • Two quilted mattress pads, for cot (to protect the mattress). Again, the fit should be very snug.
    • Two washable cot or carry cot blankets (optional). These are fine for use in the pram or over a baby who is buckled into a car seat. But baby blanket should be avoided for sleep (especially after the first month) because such bedding is a risk factor for SIDS. It's much safer to dress your baby in blanket sleepers or other warm nightclothes instead. If you do choose to use a blanket, it should be lightweight and not densely woven, without any long fringes or with a loose weave that might unravel; it should be  tucked under the mattress and only reach baby's underarms. Once baby's able to move around more (sometime after the first month, though possibly earlier or later), a blanket shouldn't be used at all sleep.
    • Two to six waterproof pads, for protecting cot, pram, furniture and laps. One to two blankets for pram or buggy. Just one lightweight blankets for a summer baby.
    • Two to three terry-cloth towels. Hooded baby towels are best, since they keep baby's head warm after a bath.
    • Two to three soft flannels.
    • A Dozen square cloth nappies or 'muslin'(burping cloths), for protecting your shoulders when burping baby, to protect sheets when baby spits up, for emergency bibs, and much more.
    • Two to five swaddling blankets, depending on the season. Newborns like to be swaddled, and swaddling or receiving blankets are useful when trying to make your baby cozy.
